The Federal government recently passed legislation to make September 30th a federal statutory holiday called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The new law commemorates the history and lasting effects of Canada's residential school system, and honours Indigenous survivors, and their families and communities. The holiday was one of the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
This holiday applies to all federally regulated public and private workplaces, including banks which may impact closing dates for new homes set on September 30th, 2021. If a closing is already scheduled for September 30th, 2021, purchasers and builders are encouraged to work together with legal counsel to do a mutual agreement to move the closing date forward by one day to September 29th, 2021. For new purchase agreements, builders should avoid setting the closing date for September 30th.
In recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Tarion’s offices will be closed but our Customer Service team will be available by both phone and email to respond to inquiries.
