Important Information about Deposit Protection
Following public consultations in 2024, Tarion is taking action to fight illegal activity and protect current and future new home purchasers.
In a phased approach, starting July 1, 2025, new freehold home purchasers are encouraged to provide notice of their new home purchase to Tarion within 45 days of entering into an agreement of purchase and sale with a vendor/builder.
This change will apply to all purchase agreements signed on or after July 1, 2025.
Registering a purchase agreement is free, simple, fast, and benefits you in several ways:
- Creates a record of the purchase with Tarion;
- Allows Tarion to provide you with key information on the builder’s warranty on your new home; and
- Allows Tarion to ensure the builder is acting legally and take steps to protect you if they were not.
Register your agreement – its quick and easy!
Once you have registered your agreement, you will receive a welcome email from Tarion that includes information on the warranty, links to key resources like the Homeowner Learning Hub, and how to reach out to Tarion if you have an issue.
Getting this information right when you sign your agreement gives you the opportunity to learn about your new home warranty before you get the keys to your new home.
A home is one of life’s biggest purchases – it’s important to protect your investment and Tarion is here to help!
Please note: Beginning January 1, 2026, to encourage homeowners to register this information early, the deposit coverage rules have been modified:
- Purchasers who register within 45 days of signing their agreement will qualify for the maximum available deposit coverage.
- Purchasers who register later (or do not register) will qualify for a different, potentially lower, level of deposit coverage.
