Tarion Continues to Make Progress in Addressing Auditor General Recommendations

TORONTO – Tarion is seeking public input on proposed consumer protection initiatives to build a more transparent, fair, and accountable new home warranty and protection program.

The proposed changes address three of the recommendations of the Auditor General, as well as one additional consumer protection initiative. Public feedback will help inform Tarion’s implementation of the recommendations. To date, Tarion has implemented 19 of 25 recommendations.

The proposed changes include:

  • A new customer service standard to improve homeowners’ ability to seek assistance from Tarion, to reduce the number of missed timelines, and to increase opportunities for homeowners to receive warranty coverage;
  • A new warranty on unfinished items at the time of possession to provide homeowners with additional protection and ensure they retain their full warranty rights; and
  • A new process on information sharing with municipalities to help encourage better building practices.

In addition, Tarion is consulting on a consumer protection initiative to create a new accommodation warranty to protect homeowners who need to relocate during warranty repairs.

This consultation builds upon the progress Tarion has made over the past year and follows the roadmap to modernize our operations outlined in the implementation plan that was released in 2020. Of the 25 recommendations directed to Tarion in the report, 19 were completed in 2020, with the remaining six to be completed in 2021.Together, the changes Tarion is making will help homeowners, increase consumer confidence, and create a stronger new home warranty and protection program for all Ontarians.
